Like Walt Whitman and Yoo JungKylie Jenner before her, Katy Perry wants you to know that nothing is quite what it seems at first blush.
Perry's zig zagging road to Witnesshas another detour: an album trailer that responds to the question, "Katy, what are you doing?" with a bizarrely defensive tone.

"Can you see me? I mean, I know you can see me, but can you reallysee me?" she asks the camera. "My name is Kathryn Hudson."
The most immediate point of reference for what's happening before my eyes is Millionaire Matchmaker. Episodes typically begin with some sort of minor celebrity like Perez Hilton in a studio filming a dating video while they explain the burden of their particular privileged prisons of their own design. Perez Hilton swears he is not the snarky, fame thirsty blogger everyone thinks he is because that's exactly the persona he put forth in order to rise to the level of someone using a dating service for rich people on television.
Here's what the Millionaire Matchmaker Patty Stanger knows what Katy's still trying to figure out, though: you can't have it all at once. Buffets appeal to your eyes more than your stomach.
"I'm vulnerable and strong. I'm a woman, an artist. I'm liberated. Goofy. And I'm not always right," she admits. "I'm Katy Perry and I'm not just one thing."
We also get a little teaser of the title track of the album, "Can I get a witness?" Perry pleads over a disco beat. "Will you be my witness?" And yeah, we see you, but like most eyewitnesses, we still don't know what's going on.
