The Trump-friendly National Enquirer publisher American Media is buying Us Weekly for $100 million, CNBC reported Wednesday afternoon.
The tabloid had been up for sale and almost went to Tronc, the Chicago Tribunepublisher. Instead, it's moving from Wenner Media, home of Rolling Stone, to American Media. American Media CEO David Pecker is a major supporter and personal friend of President Donald Trump.
American Media also owns Star and OK! magazines, the gossip site Radar Online, Men's Fitness, and a few other publications. In the Trump era, the National Enquirer has pivoted from covering aliens and UFOs to publishing "proof Obama wiretapped Trump — spies tell all!"
So now Us Weekly's recent covers make sense. And we can expect to see more of them.

For five weeks in a row starting in January, the magazine put the Trump children and first lady on its cover (but never the president himself).
So far we've gotten "Ivanka's New Life," "Melania & Donald: Separate Lives," "Ivanka & Jared: Under Pressure," "Melania's Struggle," and "The First Family," which featured all five Trump children together.
Those covers prompted some backlash, but Us Weekly kept on going.

Before Trump's inauguration — and before the election — the magazine experimented with a few transitional Trump covers: "Melania's Private World" and "The Donald Only I Know," which featured a story bylined by Melania Trump way back in January 2016.

The post-inauguration Us Weekly covers came after People magazine put a triumphant "President Trump" on its cover days after the November election. People — owned by the less political Time Inc. — saw a swift online backlash for what many claimed was an effort to normalize the Trump presidency, and since then has kept the Trumps off its covers. People even put the Obamas on its cover shortly before they left the White House.
After its Trump spree, Us Weekly went back to its usual staples, too: Bachelor Nick Viall, a couple from Dancing With the Stars and Prince Harry and his girlfriend Meghan Markle.
According to a story in the New York Post, Us Weekly staffers are worried about the layoffs that come with any acquisition — but also about the editorial direction their new bosses will want to see. It's been three weeks since a Trump cover, but at this point it's only a matter of time.
Get ready to see the Trumps at the CVS checkout line every week.
